This redesign was a long time coming, here comes the fresh 2024 Volvo XC60. This SUV is one of many under the Swedish manufacturer flag. The smaller of the bunch, XC60 doesn’t lack in many regards. It is one of the top-selling SUVs on the market with good reason. It is elegant, stylish, and well-performing. To some, it is not as obvious, but the SUV is among the best luxury SUVs on the market. The redesign of the XC60 family of SUVs has been announced by the Swedish manufacturer. Additionally, they are skipping the conventional combustion engine this time. The upcoming SUV will only be powered by electricity.
By taking this important step forward, Volvo makes sure that the XC60’s market share is not harmed by pollution rules. Minor technological and cosmetic adjustments are also possible for the SUV’s interior. There won’t be any significant exterior changes. Maybe a little tweaking to the body design. Everything is changing underneath the hood. Volvo revealed an all-electric drivetrain. There are many questions regarding the final outlook of the XC60. So let’s take a closer look at all the information we currently have. Because this redesign is about to rock the market.
Volvo XC60 Interior Updates
Not much is likely to change on the inside. Along with a sleek interior, the new 2024 Volvo XC60 includes some upgraded technology. More padding improves the seats, and if you frequently go camping or off-road, it will be beneficial. For infotainment, a sizable touchscreen will be provided. The back row can participate in the fun because the size is probably approximately 14 inches. They intend to launch Volvo Cars, a piece of software that monitors every aspect of the vehicle.
Also, it shows how much power it still has. It controls the climate, lights, locks, ignition, and pretty much anything else that is attached to a battery in the automobile. Driving while using neither hand is possible. Autonomous Luminar LiDAR driving is what it is termed. In this manner, you can unwind while driving down pre-mapped roads as the computer does the driving for you. Five people may fit comfortably, while the third row remains an XC90-only feature.
Fresh Exterior Design
The outside of the 2024 Volvo XC60 is looking fresh. There are some minor tweaks to the body design which improve ergonomics and aerodynamics. In return, this makes fuel economy and handling much better. There are 19-inch wheel rims that are quite the head turner. No all-terrain tires for the XC60. There are Thor’s hammer headlights on the front which are as bright as day. The bumpers are not huge and they fit well with the overall design.
Engine Specs, Transmission
The updated XC60 is all about innovation and the powertrain options are excellent for the upcoming SUV. There is variety as some prefer it that way. And all the three options available are quite good. Volvo offers, as we said, three distinct powertrains. We have B5, B6 and T8. They all come with eight-speed automatic transmission, which is quite the industry standard. The B5 powertrain is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that has a mild hybrid system with 48 volts. This combined equals 247 horsepower which is more than enough to propel the compact SUV. The B6 powertrain is the same 2.0-liter, four-cylinder.
However, it is turbocharged which is good for 295 horses when maxed out. The T8 engine is a plug-in hybrid that uses the B6’s engine and gives it a set of electric motors. This combination is amazing as it results in 455 horsepower. It is quick around the corners and is sticky to the road, so no drifting and sliding with this one. The steering is very reactive and the breaks will stop you on a dime. But there is also talk about a fully electric powertrain. An SUV’s electric propulsion system is not an easy project to complete. As a response, Volvo worked with Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt to create the company’s upcoming flagship model.
In the foreseeable future, the XC60 and XC90 will both be electric vehicles. Volvo anticipates that by taking these actions, half of the company’s total sales revenue of electric SUVs will come from these vehicles. When it is released, the SUV will be known as the XC60 Electric. Integrating the new platform was the initial thing that had to be done. They employed something known as Scalable Platform Architecture 2 or SPA2. The platform allows for the implementation of a variety of floor designs and can accommodate all the components required for an electric engine. It will have better-grade battery cells inside.
This denotes an improvement to lithium-ion batteries. In these, the energy density is around 50% higher. With new technology, it may be possible to reduce charging times in half in the not-too-distant future. Starting in 2024, the Volvo XC60 will have two distinct motors. Given that there is one for each axle and a total of 536 horsepower, this is a tremendous power output for a vehicle of this size. The SUV’s charging capacity is 200 kW. However, these are all in the working, so nothing is official yet and we just have to wait for something official and tangible.
Fuel Efficiency
The upcoming 2024 Volvo XC60 gets 22 mpg in the city and 28 on the open road with the B5 powertrain. The B6 model gets 21 and 27 respectively. Now the Recharge and Polestar with the T8 get 32 miles of electric-only drive which is quite impressive. A fully electric version would increase these numbers and give a lot of buy appeal to an already good-looking SUV.
