We are getting another great SUV redesign; this time around, it is the 2024 Lexus GX 460. Although it is a very popular SUV that brings a lot to the table, it is a bit stale. The current version of the body-on-frame SUV has been on the road since 2009. This makes it quite obsolete in terms of technology and style in the SUV category. It is about time that the GX got a redesign, and we are expecting some nice changes from Lexus. Luxury and style are almost synonymous with the Lexus name.
So, you can expect a lot of changes on the inside of the SUV and some new materials for the upholstery. The outside will also receive some updates. Some are going to be purely stylistic, while others will help with ergonomics and aerodynamics. The powertrain is a big question mark for now. There are many rumors about possible electrification for the GX line of SUVs. But that doesn’t mean we are saying goodbye to the good old internal combustion engines. We are expecting the pickup very soon. And electrification makes sense due to strict regulations for emissions. Let’s see all the details we know so far.
Lexus GX 460 Interior
The new 2024 Lexus GX 460 is all about style and a first-class feel. The interior will receive a lot of upgrades, both concerning style and technology. It has new seating with better cushioning. There will be a third row available. Furthermore, there is a 10.3-inch touchscreen display that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also a huge multi-information display between the gauge clusters. We would have liked it if the clusters were digital as well.
We get blind spot monitors for rear parking. It has hill-start assist control to help you start while on an incline. There is three-zone automatic climate control with a smog sensor and a recirculation mode. The seats are heated and ventilated, which is a nice addition. The material is soft and durable and made of leather. There are some wood accents to add luxury points.
Exterior Redesign
The exterior of the 2024 Lexus GX 460 is nothing less spectacular than the interior. It has premium triple-beam LED headlamps. The GX has a modern L shape. On the front, we have a huge mesh painted in black with a Lexus logo. Ride height is commendable, so nothing gets stuck under you. There are also running boards on the side to make getting in and out easier.
The body design is ergonomic and aerodynamic to help with steering and fuel economy. We also get a power moonroof, rain-sensing wipers, and a de-icer on the windshield. There are 18-inch alloy wheels that look quite sharp, with the option of switching to 19-inch ones.
Engine and Performance
The new 2024 Lexus GX 460 is not going to have a lot of choices for the powertrain. But the lack of choices doesn’t necessarily mean a bad thing. The big SUV will use a 4.8-liter, naturally aspirated V8 engine. This beast will be under the hood of all trims; there are four available so far. The big engine can produce 300 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque. This doesn’t sound like much, but it is more than enough to move the big GX around. It is equipped with variable valve timing that uses technology to improve low-speed torque and high-speed power. The GX 460 comes with all-wheel drive only. This is the only such SUV in the class, and we have to say it is refreshing.
This will give much better traction on and off the paved road. Transfer cases can be locked in both low and high range. There is also adaptive variable suspension. This is a system that electronically changes the settings of the shock absorbers on each wheel. This all depends on your preferences and the current environment you are driving in. There is a Multi-Terrain Select system. This will optimize driveability and handling no matter where you are driving. There is rock, rock and dirt, mogul, loose rock, mud, and sand. Towing capacity is maxed out at 6500 pounds, which is commendable for an SUV.
There is trailer sway control, which will keep your cargo safe. The system can brake each wheel separately to maintain stability and decrease sway while turning the SUV. There is also a special slip differential. The all-wheel drive helps with traction. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip center differential efficiently distributes engine power. It can even increase or decrease power to axles separately to improve stability and traction. There are some rumors about a hybrid and an electric version. But nothing was officially confirmed by Lexus. So we can only hope that it happens. This would require a new platform to accommodate a different powertrain. Everything would be moving under the cabin. A battery pack of at least 100 kWh would do the trick. This would match or surpass the power equivalent of the current powertrain. Also, it would give it good range. But as technology advances, we can expect an even bigger battery. We guess no one will argue that.
Fuel Economy
The 2024 Lexus GX 460 is not cheap to keep running, though. Currently, the SUV gets 15 mpg in city driving, 19 on the highway, and 16 mpg combined. These numbers would be greatly improved by introducing a hybrid or electric powertrain.
2024 Lexus GX 460 Price and Release Date
We are expecting the SUV to drop sometime during the summer of next year. The 2024 Lexus GX 460 is estimated to start at $55,000. Of course, the price will increase depending on amenities, and keep in mind there are four different trims. We have the regular GX 460, the Premium, the Luxury, and the Black Line Special Edition.
