The upcoming 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is about to hit the roads. After the latest spy shots are available, some things are much clearer now. Volkswagen will introduce Atlas’ sportier variant in the coming months. Unlike the regular three-row model, Atlas Cross Sport will offer two rows of seats and a room for five.
Cross Sport is based on the concept that carries the name “Teramont X” (picture below). Ample interior room and sporty styling will surely please the customers. As for the performances, this coupe-like crossover will offer two engine choices.
2020 Cross Sport Spy Shots, Dimensions
The exterior of the new 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport is very similar to the original concept. The most obvious similarities are the sloped roofline and rear part of the vehicle. New spy shots are perfectly showing those cues, despite the camouflage. It is very easy to spot a concept-inspired feature, even upfront. The front fascia wears large lower vents, a sleek grille, and brand-new headlights.
Cross Sport will ride on a famous MQB platform and it comes with the same 117.3-inch wheelbase, as the original Atlas crossover. However, the Cross Sport variant is almost six inches shorter. This sporty variant traded third-row for a sloping roofline and better aerodynamics. That, plus the new suspension and Cross Sport is more agile on the road than its sibling.
Two-Row Seating Layout
Unfortunately, the spy shots failed to provide interior details. However, we believe Volkswagen will surely focus on the concept. Knowing that the 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport will surely arrive similar to the original concept. For the start, a two-row seating configuration is the most significant change. The dashboard design is the same as in the regular Atlas model.
However, the sporty crossover will arrive with a digital instrument cluster and central touchscreen. However, hard plastic materials are available once again. It looks cheap, especially on the door panels. The steering wheel is completely new and it looks thinner. The same three-spoke steering wheel looks sportier and it hosts fewer buttons.
Turbocharged Four-Cylinder or Powerful V6?
Volkswagen focused on off-roading abilities. The forthcoming 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport will get better departure and approach angles than the base variant. It is a traditional cue for the off-road models. Whatsoever, Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Grand Cherokee are doing the same. Still, Cross Sport isn’t as off-road capable as those two models. However, it does offer hill descent control and a 4Motion AWD system.
Furthermore, Off-Road driving mode is on the offer too. Under the hood, Atlas Cross Sport will arrive with two engine options. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder delivers 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This turbocharged engine comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an optional AWD setup. An optional 3.6-liter V6 cranks out 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. This engine offers the same transmission as the entry-level unit.
